A unique ecosystem, as personal as a fingerprint.
What it is
Il microbiota intestinale is the complex, dynamic community of billions of microorganisms — bacteria, viruses, fungi and archaea — living in the intestinal tract. This ecosystem is different in every person, like a fingerprint, and is closely linked to health.
Il microbioma is instead the genetic material of those microorganisms: it is what the test analyses in order to reconstruct the composition of the microbiota.
What it does
It breaks down complex foods such as fibre, which the body alone could not digest, producing beneficial substances such as short-chain fatty acids.
It acts as a protective barrier against pathogens, stimulating and modulating the immune response.
It contributes to the synthesis of B and K vitamins, and of other metabolites useful to the body.
It communicates directly with the central nervous system, influencing mood, cognitive ability and stress management through biochemical signals.
It regulates energy use, supporting metabolic balance and influencing body weight control.
It changes over time and responds to what we eat, how we live and the treatments we undergo.
When the balance breaks down
When the microbiota is in balance it creates an environment that supports health. An unbalanced diet, stress, antibiotics, illness or infection can disturb this harmony, leading to a condition known as disbiosi.
Knowing and monitoring your microbiota is a way of preventing, not only treating.
The gut microbiota test
The test uses metagenomic sequencing to analyse the DNA of the microorganisms in the gut. It identifies the species present and assesses the balance between them.
IVD-certified instruments, for a biocomputational assessment of the bacterial genetic material.
Not a list of numbers: the report comes with a written analysis by doctors experienced in the microbiota.
After the test you can book a dedicated appointment to go through the report and what it means in practice.
If needed, the pathway continues with the gastroenterology and nutrition specialists to rebalance the microbiota.
To find out in advance whether the test is useful in your case, you can book a screening pre-test with a DOTTOR@HOUSE specialist.
Microbiota
Together we assess whether the test is right for you, and what to expect from the report.
