A third of our life, and almost nobody checks it.
Why sleep matters
Sleep takes up about a third of our life. When it is reduced — whatever the cause — it interferes with fundamental physiological processes, and the consequences show in the body, in behaviour and in daily performance.
It is not a new problem, but it has worsened: the pace of life of recent decades has steadily eroded night-time rest. It is from this awareness that, from the 1960s onwards, Sleep Medicine emerged — the discipline that diagnoses and treats these disorders.
A neglected sleep disorder affects the waking hours: work, relationships, psychological balance. Over time it is associated with a higher risk of infections and of metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
The most common disorders
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, OSAS.
Teeth grinding during sleep.
The uncontrollable urge to move the legs at night.
Episodes that occur only during sleep.
Sudden sleep attacks during the day.
These disorders are widespread, yet only a small fraction of those affected are properly assessed. Which is a pity: correct treatment brings immediate benefits — sleepiness disappears, concentration returns — and long-term benefits, with a reduction in the risk of associated conditions.
How do I know if it concerns me
If you feel you are not sleeping well, or you feel tired during the day even after sleeping, a sleep disorder may be behind it. The first step is to talk to your GP or go directly to a sleep medicine specialist.
