Snoring is not just a nuisance for whoever sleeps next to you.
A widespread and undertreated disorder
More than half of Italians snore, and roughly one person in four lives with episodes of sleep apnoea. Snoring is in itself a sleep disorder. In some cases, however, it is the sign of something more serious.
La obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is characterised by repeated closure of the upper airway during sleep. Each episode produces a brief, entirely unconscious micro-awakening, accompanied by a drop in blood oxygen. Those affected are unaware of it: they simply wake up feeling unrested.
Perché conta. Untreated OSAS is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular events, obesity and diabetes. The daytime sleepiness it causes is also a recognised cause of road and workplace accidents. Despite this, only a small proportion of those affected are diagnosed. Identified in time, OSAS can be treated.
How to tell whether it concerns you
The first clue often comes from whoever shares the room: habitual, persistent snoring with pauses in breathing.
Only an instrumental sleep test allows the doctor to confirm the diagnosis and decide on treatment.
