Do you need to obtain or renew your driving licence and suffer from snoring or apnoea? Here is what the law requires.
OSAS and fitness to drive
To obtain or renew a driving licence, sleep-related breathing disorders that may compromise road safety must be identified and treated. The rule applies in particular to those with moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome associated with daytime sleepiness.
In these cases the licence is issued only if the person documents that they are under treatment and that the condition is controlled. Without documentation, issue is suspended until it is provided.
What changes, point by point
Snoring, apnoea and insomnia affect daily life, but they also have a direct consequence for driving: microsleeps, today among the most frequent causes of road accidents.
Sleep apnoea combined with daytime sleepiness causes sudden lapses in attention. This is why the law requires those at risk to be identified before the risk becomes an accident.
Those who snore loudly and habitually, those who are overweight, those past a certain age: these are the conditions most often associated with sleep apnoea. Where they are present, a medical assessment is advisable.
Identifying the disorder early is the most effective route. Where it is already present, treatments exist that can eliminate it or significantly reduce it. An instrumental sleep test confirms whether it is there.
Attend the medical examination with documentation showing either the absence of the disorder or, if present, that appropriate treatment is under way.
At DOTTOR@HOUSE it starts with the specialist visit, which establishes what further investigations are needed and how to obtain the clinical documentation for the medical board.
